It is important to keep you transmission serviced on a regular basis. Today's vehicles with overdrives tend to heat the oil up more so than the old three speeds. The transmission oil is not exposed to the outside air so it does not get as dirty as motor oil but breaks down due to heat. To keep the lubricating qualities of the fluid dropping the pan and changing the filter and fluid is a good idea.

Some repair facilities choose to do a flush versus a transmission service. This does in fact push all the old oil out and replaces it with new but if the pan is not dropped and the filter changed all of the contaminants  are flushed through your transmission as well. We have seen first hand the results of stuck valves and solenoids due to flushes.

If you keep your transmission serviced on a regular basis, enough of the oil gets changed with a pan drop to keep the lubricating qualities of the oil.

If you have a check engine light on or an OD light flashing your vehicle needs to be checked by a professional.  Also if your transmission fluid is low this means you have a leak. Transmissions do not burn oil the way an engine can. Don't run a transmission low!  It doesn't take long to do significant damage.
